Some key figures in Purdue football coach history include:
Jack Mollenkopf (1956-1969): Mollenkopf is often considered the best coach in Purdue history, leading the Boilermakers to a 84-39-9 record and three Big Ten titles. He coached several future NFL stars, such as Bob Griese and Leroy Keyes.
Joe Tiller (1997-2008): Tiller helped revitalize Purdue football in the late 1990s and early 2000s, leading the team to 10 bowl games and a Big Ten title in 2000. He is credited with introducing the "spread offense" to college football and helped develop several future NFL quarterbacks, such as Drew Brees and Kyle Orton.
Jim Colletto (1991-1996): Colletto had a mixed record at Purdue, going 21-42-3, but he is notable for leading the team to its first bowl game in 14 years in 1997 (after Tiller's recruits had matured). He also helped recruit several key players who later became stars under Tiller.
Jack Trudeau (2017, interim): Trudeau, a former Purdue quarterback and NFL player, served as interim coach for the final game of the 2017 season after head coach Jeff Brohm tested positive for COVID-19. The Boilermakers lost that game to Indiana, but Trudeau's brief tenure was notable for being the first time a Purdue alum had coached the team in a game since 1946.
